Constable Matt Wylie has been a Johnson County resident for thirty-five years and a resident of the Rio Vista area for 30 years. Matt and his family are members of The Chisholm Trail Cowboy Church of Rio Vista, where Matt serves as co-chair of the church safety team.
Matt married Becky Bachhofer in 1993, in Rio Vista. Matt and Becky have two daughters: Haley Wylie, a nurse at John Peter Smith Hospital and Skyler Wylie Jones, a homemaker and mother of four children, Derek, Oaklyn (passed-a-way 2016), Haizlyn and Sutton Jones.
Matt has one brother, Mike Wylie, a 30-year veteran Criminal Investigator with the Texas Department of Public Safety, one stepbrother Brad Alford, a Physical Therapist Assistant and three stepsisters: Shirley Beggs, a local Restaurant and Hair Salon owner, Kay Leigh King, a Nurse Practitioner and Paulette Hartman, formerly Joshua City Manager, now the First Assistant City Manager of North Richland Hills.
Matt comes from a multi-generational law enforcement family. Matt’s grandfather, Virgil Sheridan, was a Tarrant County Deputy. Matt’s father, Mike (passed-a-way 2008) was with Ft Worth PD and Johnson Co. Sheriff's Office as a Detective. Matt’s mother, Marty Alford was a Ft Worth PD Investigator and a FAA Federal Air Marshal and retired as Director of Central Office Joint Security and Hazardous Materials. Matt’s stepfather, Bob Alford, retired from the Texas Dept. of Public Safety as a Criminal Investigator and is the retired Sheriff of Johnson County, having served for twenty years.
Matt has over 30 years of dedicated law enforcement experience and service in Johnson County; with more than seventeen of those years, serving as your Precinct One Constable.
Matt holds an Associate of Arts degree and an Associates of Applied Science in Law Enforcement: Texas Peace Officer from Hill College, a Bachelor of Arts and Applied Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Tarleton State University.
Matt also holds a Master Peace Officers Certificate, the highest certification awarded by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) additionally, Matt holds an Instructors Certificate, Civil Process Proficiency Certificate (2003), Courtroom Security Specialist Certificate, School Based Law Enforcement Certification and the Distinguished FBI-LEED Trilogy Award, as well as numerous other training and education certificates. Matt’s TCLOE record reflects 7,731 training/education hours.
In 2017, Matt served as Chair of the Constables Education Committee, for all Constable’s in Texas.
In 2020, Matt was the Texas Constable of the Year, selected by the Justice of the Peace and Constable’s Assoc.
Matt recognizes the need for continuing education and the inherent need for local and statewide connections with other law enforcement agencies to better serve the citizens of Johnson County. These local and statewide connections are paramount to address communal areas of needs and concerns facing law enforcement in Johnson County and across our great state.
In 2021 and 2022, Matt served the elected President of the Justice of the Peace and Constables Association, which is the largest state association, with the most elected County Officials, serving the citizens of Texas. Due to Matt’s experience and recognized expertise in Civil Process, County Relationships among Elected Officials, and Civil Liability in a Law Enforcement setting, Matt is repeatedly called upon as an instructor at the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT), Basic Police Officer Academy for the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and to host area agencies for required training.
Locally, Matt serves on the boards of the Johnson County Family Crisis Center, the Johnson County Child Welfare Board, where he is the secretary, Hill College CJ/DAAC Advisory Board. Matt is an Endowed Master Mason, a Lifetime Member of The Chisholm Trail 100 Club and a member of the Cleburne Christian Business Club.
